60 Over 60

A Conversation with Art & Cake Magazine

Even after twenty years something new will excite me. I think it’s that childlike quality in me that comes to life.”

I had the pleasure of chatting to LA art magazine Art and Cake recently, for their interview series featuring artists over 60. I’m among fine company in this series, with a lot of good advice and insights from talented working artists creating art later in life.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview. You can read the full version here on the Art and Cake website.

Art and Cake: What keeps you excited in the studio?

Clara Berta: I get excited to explore and try out new techniques and create in new ways even after twenty years something new will excite me. I think it’s that childlike quality in me that comes to life.

Art and Cake: What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?

Clara Berta: We have an important role as artists, as we need to bring more healing and beauty into the world with our work. I feel that I am making a difference. I desire to see my work in hospitals and in health care.

Art and Cake: What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?

Clara Berta: It’s important to get a mentor and find your network of artists that you love and admire. You need that support to carry you through many years to come.

Art and Cake: Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?

Clara Berta: As I get older and wiser, I am grateful for becoming more spiritual and practicing daily meditation. I enjoy contributing to my community in new ways. I also love mentoring artists.
